United Kingdom--Fantasy TV shows such as Game of Thrones are blamed for a massive increase in the number of huskies being abandoned, according to an animal charity.

Staff at Blue Cross say there has been a 700 per cent increase in the number of huskies being abandoned due to dramas like Game Of Thrones and the Twilight Saga, which feature similar looking animals, in the past five years.

'Dire wolves' are the animal companions of the Stark family in the hit fantasy show, while the vampire drama features werewolves.

The charity is also appealing for a litter of husky puppies to be re-homed after their mother was kicked out of her home while she was pregnant.

'Huskies have now made the most-unwanted top ten for first time ever.

'People don’t realise they need to be looked after properly. They are bred as working dogs in cold countries.

'They need a lot of exercising and taking care of.'

Hit: The popularity of the Twilight films, which features werewolves, is believed to be a factor in the rise of wolf-like dogs being abandoned by owners unable to care for the demanding animals

You can't blame the shows for the stupidity of the people that did not research the breed before they took on the responsibility. I have a Siberian Husky that is now 4yrs old. I love him like he is my child and wouldn't trade him for anything. But I unlike some researched the breed before I decided he was the dog for me!! They come with a LOT of hair, energy and love!!!!

I have 1 Siberian husky, he sheds more than my other 4 dogs put together, has more than twice their energy. They're not a breed for people that just want a dog, they need work, more work than most dogs, and even with a lot of work their energy is still wild at times. Sure there's always the accidents in the house and stuff that drives you crazy when they're little and out of control, but I guess I'm not like most people that after a week simply just give up.

we have a big house with a nice fenced yard, and shelter animals all the time. If this family is on the east coast and needs a home until permanent homes can be found, they have 1

I rescue wolfdogs, it's just unimaginable the amount of them that became popular and are either turned loose thinking they are wolves and can survive or end up in animal control. 8000 a year of these beautiful animals are put down.

It might help if breeders and shelters monitor and check who they give these dogs to. You don't just hand them over to the first person to walk up with the money. Young idiots want them as a social status. "Oh look what I have, just like the movie." Parents buy them so themselves and their children can show off. "My mommy and daddy bought me a puppy just like in the movie." When the movie gets old so does the dog, and they dump them.
101 Dalmations had everybody calling for Dalmations. Marley had people looking for Golden Retrievers and Yellow Labs. Paris Hilton had everybody looking for Chihuahuas'.

i am 56 years old and have wanted a huskie my whole life i know they are a lot of work and have a back yard i can not people are doing this crap ...the only reason i do not have a huskie puppy is the price they want to charge for these pets some times being rich hold no candle to love and affections... and yes i think i could handle shots and vert bills if i need to

I would love to have a Husky puppy. Just very hard to find here where I live unless you pay an arm and a leg.

People seriously research the breeds before you buy or adopt! Too many of these dogs are being put to sleep all over the world. They need walking, they pull while walking so you need a head collar. They have sensitive stomachs, they get diarrhea. They mouth you NOT bite, they get bored very easily and can chew through your furniture so sometimes they need caging. They shed fur a lot, you can get a furminator to brush them, they work a treat. I have 4 rescue Huskies from around the world and they have cost me a fortune in vet fees, but I love them they are my furbabies and I could never give them up!!!!
