Amazing to see what happens after the mommy elephant gives the calf a push!

A safari group touring through South Africa’s Kruger National Park came upon a potentially devastating sight — a just-born baby elephant, lying on the ground motionless while his mother paced around him. With a thermal camera, the tourists realized that he was still alive, but not moving.

The video footage starts about 0:44 seconds in, with the tourists whispering, “Please get up.”

But to the great relief of the onlookers, the calf finally stands, leaning on his mother for support. He begins to walk along with mom, steadier with each step.

Because elephants take a long time — 22 months — to develop inside their mother’s womb and mothers only have calves every four years, every single baby is of great value to the herd. And with poaching wiping out elephants at an alarming rate — over 100,000 in the past three years — young elephants may be the species’ only chance for survival.
