Adult ravens seems to lack natural enemies, so they can afford to be playful. In this scene from Wild Russia, they frolic in the snow like children.

Ravens love a fresh snowfall. This raven truly seems to be enjoying itself as it rolls again and again through the snow — more like a puppy than a bird.

The Native Americans weren’t far off about the raven’s mischievous nature. They have been observed in Alaska and Canada using snow-covered roofs as slides.

In Maine, they have been seen rolling down snowy hills. They often play keep-away with other animals like wolves, otters, and dogs. Ravens even make toys—a rare animal behavior—by using sticks, pinecones, golf balls, or rocks to play with each other or by themselves.

And sometimes they just taunt or mock other creatures because it’s funny.

    Ravens are AMAZING!

  4. I bought some baby ducks years ago, they turned out to be Mallards, Since we hand raised them and handled them a lot they became friendly with us. The first time it snowed they totally shocked me! They was like ducks taking to water...they literally swan threw the snow! They loved it...& so did we as well as everyone who stopped by. Put huge smiles on everyone's faces.

I've seen pelicans and gulls play with sticks (throwing them in the air and catching them). I've seen photos of polar bears playing with sticks too. I watched a Cassin's kingbird toss a berry in the air and catch it several times before swallowing it. I don't think playing with toys is as rare as you make it out to be.

play is an evolutionary milestone because when a species can pause to think about personal joy, instead of constantly fighting to survive, something profound is happening!
