The man almost drowned after plunging into the water when his two-year-old Labrador got into trouble

Everyone knows that a dog is man’s best friend, but sometimes, a man can be a dog’s best friend, too! This was the case in the UK this week when a man jumped into the fast moving the Mersey River to save his dog. The man and his dog, a two year old Labrador Retriever, were playing a spirited game of fetch on the river banks, when the ball fell into the water.

Freddie Brown was a witness to the scene: “The dog decided to go for a swim, but … it couldn’t make its way back to the shore. They tried to throw a lifebelt in but that didn’t work. Then they threw a rope ladder down. The dog was drifting away quite rapidly. It was swimming but against the tide, so it wasn’t getting anywhere.”

He told the Liverpool Echo,”There were about 20 people watching and everyone was panicking. Eventually the man went down the ladder but the dog is a big Labrador, so he grabbed it but he couldn’t get himself and the dog back up the ladder. Another person went down to hold onto them both until the emergency services arrived.”

Mr Brown added, “It was quite dramatic to see it all happening in front of you.” Eventually, both the dog and the man were rescued by the Merseyside Fire and Rescue’s Marine Rescue Unit.

Luckily, despite the cold water and seven knot current, everyone was unharmed. This was a brave act that just goes to show how much we love our canine companions. But lets hope he learned his lesson about playing fetch on the riverbed, so that they can enjoy many more years together.
