Humane Society International has expressed outrage that 122 pregnant female whales were killed this year in the Southern Ocean as part of Japan's whaling program NEWREP-A.

The information was contained in newly published meeting papers from the International Whaling Commission Scientific Committee meeting held in Slovenia in May.

The results show that of the 333 Antarctic minke whales killed this year, 181 were females. 122 or 67 percent of these females were pregnant and 53 or 29 percent were immature animals.

"The killing of 122 pregnant whales is a shocking statistic and sad indictment on the cruelty of Japan's whale hunt. It is further demonstration, if needed, of the truly gruesome and unnecessary nature of whaling operations, especially when non-lethal surveys have been shown to be sufficient for scientific needs,” said Alexia Wellbelove, Senior Program Manager at Humane Society International.

Despite condemnation by the international community and the International Court of Justice, which ruled in 2014 that Japan's JARPA II Antarctic whaling program was illegal and must stop, Japan re-badged its whaling program and sent its whaling fleet to the Southern Ocean for its annual whale hunt again in 2015. Japan withdrew its recognition of the International Court of Justice as an arbiter of disputes over whales.

Japan's whaling fleet has returned home from the Southern Ocean in March this year after a successful 143-day investigation “without being interfered with by the anti-whaling group” - a reference to Sea Shepherd.

Shepherd has opposed Japanese whaling in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary every year from 2005 to 2017 except for the 2014/2015 season when the whalers did not return to Antarctic waters. Sea Shepherd sent two ships down to the Southern Ocean last year (2016/2017), and although they got close, they could not close in because of advanced military satellite technology that allowed the whalers to see Sea Shepherd's movements in real time.

The organization did not return for the 2017/2018 whaling operation “because it would be like taking a slingshot to a gunfight in pursuit of whalers who can see us but we can’t see them - in other words, a fruitless waste of time and resources,” said founder Paul Watson.

In November last year, Sea Shepherd released Australian Government footage exposing details of Japanese whaling methods, obtained under Freedom of Information request. The footage shows whales dying slowly and in pain, sometimes drowning in their own blood.

"The continued killing of any whales is abhorrent to modern society, but these new figures make it even more shocking. We look forward to Australia and other pro-conservation countries sending the strongest possible message to Japan that it should stop its lethal whaling programs,” saidWellbelove.

The next meeting of the International Whaling Commission is in September in Brazil.

  35. Unknown says:

I can't believe this, you're killing pregnant whales so they can't repopulate more whales? How dare you killing God's creatures. This is severely cruelty.

  36. The problem with the world is that there are so many terrible things going on: human genocide, kidnapping, torture, murder, the mass burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, fracking, to name a few that this atrocious event is just another list in the long line of terrible things we humans inflict upon ourselves and the world we live in. The animal kingdom is suffering, humans are suffering, the earth is suffering...what is the solution to this insanity? it's going to take more than outrage because everyone is involved, from governments to big business to the media and back to us, so called common people. Money, Power, Mass control of the people and environments, mass extinction of species...to what end? Humanity has lost it's humanity, along with it's compassion and sensitivity to the green world, the natural world and the spiritual world, which for some is even in doubt. Until there is mass education on the real nature of what and who we are, with a deeper understanding of how to live in the world as a 'participant' rather than an 'owner' possessed of greed and heartlessness, then there will be this continued madness where love is secondary to wealth and gain. Are all these whalers simply loveless rotten people? Are they stuck in an industry for work, trapped in the power struggle for their own livelihood? All of us are capable of terrible things but it doesn't mean we should do those terrible things. So how do we change a culture, a tradition, a way of life, a self-possessed industry? That's the big question.

  37. No es un simple asesinato, es un atentado contra la humanidad, por ello, todos los Países deben unirse y parar estas masacres, es un acto criminal y vergonzoso. Di NO!!!!! A LA CACERIA DE BALLENAS.
It is not a simple murder, it is an attack against humanity, therefore, all countries must unite and stop these massacres, it is a criminal and shameful act. Say NO !!!!! TO THE CALL OF WHALES.

  38. Unknown says:

The Japanese whalers must now feel the condemnation of the int’l. Community. To allow this to continue is ridiculous. This has to be politicized. His literally makes me sick

  48. Fuck off Japan! Spain and China too! - scourges of the Earth. The next mass extinction will be humans - no other way - Mother will rid herself of us ingrates. Japan's will be a massive earthquake.

  49. Unknown says:

Your greed is destructive to the planet, the whales and your future generations.Stop the senseless slaughter immediately and preserve for your children.

  50. Linda says:

This is a an abhorrent practice and must be stopped immediately. Green Peace usually confronts such horrors in person, but there is a limited number of places they can be. But, please don't turn this into a racist rant about "the horrible Japanese". Our present government is trying its best to poison the environment, so we must also look to ourselves to clean our own house. Racism is far too rampant these days to throw the blame game on some "other" group.

  51. lowags says:

Taiji, Japan and everyone participated in murdering dolphins and whales and also selling them into slavery is an international embarrassment for Japan. #nothonorabletraditions

You do not learn, you not harm nature

  57. Unknown says:

Japan I do not understand how you continue to do this in the face of the reality of possible extinction. You should bow your heads inshame because you know better and still persist in this senseless slaughter.
It would seem your nation has learned little of compassion despite your own sufferings. you will be stopped from doing this again,

  58. Anonymous says:

You can judge a nation by the way they treat animals. These people are nothing short of murderers and savages - mass murderers for that matter. Absolutely disgusting & horrific ! And what is even more absurd is that no other governments are willing to do ANYTHING about it. I bet if it was about oil, everyone would be at it like a bunch of psychotic scavengers. SHAME ON HUMANITY!

  59. Unknown says:

    MURDERERS!

  60. Unknown says:

Sometimes people must be confused between human selfish being and animals being

  61. Unknown says:

It sounds like Sea Shepherd could use a little help from the US military. I see no reason for a wonderful organization like Sea Shepherd to discontinue it's valuable work because of a simple lack of tracking for these ships. The US Military knows where every ship is. Seems like you could simply ask them to assist. I'll bet our service men and women would welcome the opportunity to be of help. Am I naive?

  62. Unknown says:

    That is sick, sick, sick

  63. STOP THIS NOW JUSTICE

  64. STOP DRAB PÅ HVALERNE NU .

  65. I AM SO SICK OF THESE MURDERING BASTARDS AND THEIR PATHETIC EXCUSES FOR THESE HORRIBLE SLAUGHTERS!😡

  66. StopThem says:

They kill everything, from sharks, whales, dolphins, mantas and the world lets them get away with it. They kill dolphins to use as bait to catch sharks to cut off their fins while they are alive, throw them back in the water to die just so people can have shark fin soup. Stop supporting their country and the others that support this, don't visit, do not purchase anything from there and make others aware of what they are doing so they can do the same.

  67. Unknown says:

Of course, this is a barbaric! But so is also indirectly meat eating. No animals give their life voluntary to please the tongue of heartless humans. And it´s not just the Japanese, so many nations and individuals are involved in absurd killings of humans and animals.

  68. No one complain about killing all kinds of fish, cow, chicken, etc, for human food consumption. Why are you complaining about the Japanese killing whales for their food comsuption? You are double or multiple standards. Are you not? And excuse me, whales or any other mammals are no intelligent than human beings! All plants and animals were created by God for human beings to eat.

  69. Unknown says:

STOP WHINING!!!!!!!!!!!!!! START DOING SOMETHING!!!!! FUND SEA SHEPARD. FUND ANYBODY. WITH THE MEANS TO STOP THIS. NAH YA WONT DO THAT. Y'LL MIGHT GET THE LABEL "GREENIE". NOBODY WHO HAS COMMENTED TO THIS STORY WILL FIGHT TO STOP IT. YOU ARE ALL TOO GUTLESS. I HOPE ALL MARINE LIFE DIES, ALL FOOD SOURCES FAIL. THEN AND ONLY THEN WILL YOU GUTLSS "NERDS", WAKE-UP.

Fuck Japanese and other asians too.

  71. Unknown says:

Barbarians. People make a big deal over boycotting Israel, Venezuela, and every company that's rumored to donate money to something they disagree with. Why not an international boycott of Japan?

  72. Anonymous says:

People should understand why the number of whales has been very low. It is not because of countries that are currently hunting whales like Japan. It's happened because European countries and the U.S. had killed so many whales just to take oil from whales.
Those people could eliminate whales from the earth. They killed too much!! First those people should be shame on them!
Japan or other countries, which had/have hunted whales, have/had hunted to just eat with the feeling of gratitude...had/have not taken too much.
And now Japan are hunting whales for research to learn about whales and the sea, not for business(so far). And the number of hunting whales is basically well controlled to avoid making bad influences on the number of whales.
Don't just claim or complain. Gotta study.

  73. Unknown says:

Create an international law that imprisons anyone who purchases any parts of the whales for life, as a crime against humanity. Anihilate the market and side step any discriminatory debate of cultural traditions by targeting consumers. These whales being alive are vital to the entire Earth's Marine ecosystem. This has global consequences and thus has merit to be dealt with by the UN and enforced with vigour.

Thanks for reading this and may all the ancient spirits released from these majestic magical creatures find safe passage...

  74. Van says:

So Sad seems like in the end they will shoot themselves in the foot eliminating the species by hunting them to death. It would be far making the whales a tourist attraction instead and preserving them for future generations to enjoy. Nothing more spectacular then watching whales breaching and chasing fish

  75. Unknown says:

Why does Japan (throughout history), continually feel the need to keep proving to the civilized World, just how barbaric and sadistic (they'll say warrior-like) by nature it really is??? But coming from a nation who has systematically tortured it's "enemies" and failed to sign up to things like the Geneva Treaty and considers sadistic TV shows as normal and fair game, why should we be all that surprised? Regretably, yet another reason why this nation, should be hanging it's collective head in shame....

  76. I use to think they where a great country ..Now I Have No Respect For Them At All

  77. Unknown says:

How do we stop this. That this can be legal in this day, at this time when the entire world population should know better, is beyond me. These whales, the lions, the elephants, all wildlife deserve protection from humans, or it is the humans who are in reality worthless.

  78. JoeStIdes says:

Canadian whaling (much of it First Nations people) kill over twice the whales that Japanese whaling does. Whaling in the US (which is also primarily ran by Indigenous people) kill nearly as many whales as the Japanese whaling industry. And don't get me started on the Danish territories and Norway... Greenland has a population of 57,000 and they kill more whales than the Japanese...

  79. Truly a very sad day for humanity, and the planet! Man’s endless lack of respect and continual pillaging of its creatures doesn’t just include Japan. Do they actually think this is going to last forever? And to kill pregnant whales as well? How many species have disappeared because of the reckless actions of a few for the almighty dollar? So beyond words!

  80. Horrific beyond words!

Horrifying! Japan please stop! This is WRONG! How dare you come into our southern waters and massacre our whales! How dare you kill pregnant mothers and their babies! You won't be happy till their is none left! You are nothing less than cold blooded killers and criminals. I call on all the powers that be all over the planet to stop Japan doing this! Please. This is quite obvious that this is NOT research!

  86. Arcangelo says:

Japan should be facing economic sanctions and if they don't work tactical air strikes on the whaling ships. SHit like them is all too common but there is no replacing the whales.
