Herds of Deer peacefully enjoy the cool of the evening by laying down in the roads at Nara, Japan.

Nara, Japan is the original documented capital of Japan, although that barely lasted even 100 years before the capital was changed to Kyoto. But it is known not just for it's history as the first capital and home to a very special temple, but also for it's deer.

The deer appear to be tame, but they are still considered to be wild animals. They are very used to people, but they can get an "attitude" and become aggressive. Even the ones with antlers, these deer roam free and get up close to tourists and locals alike.

In Nara, the deer are definitely one of the major sights to see. There are also cracker vendor everywhere where you can buy crackers to feed the deer.

The deer love these crackers but the amazing thing is that they do not try and steal them from the vendors. They wait until someone buys them and then they go after the person with the crackers.

In the middle of the summer, when it cools down, the deer will come out and occupy the roads.

Enjoy the video below of this unusual and unique phenomenon.

Beautiful! Thank you for sharing. Animals are so smart. This is about coexisting. It's very encouraging. Religious nuts should keep religion for their like and themselves. Get off of here and go to church and let us peaceful nature loving folk enjoy the view.

  19. Anonymous says:

Amazing - they were there long before roads, buses, cars - maybe just a matter of needing to be part of what was their home all along.

I wanted to get the ones that were on the street out of the way of cars- all the drivers were so careful but it only takes one jerk to hurt one,

  22. Anonymous says:

This is great that the deer and humans are coexisting in this town but feeding the deer (wildlife) isn't a good idea and in the video at 1:13 that stag is in the rut.

  23. Anonymous says:

Coexisting with animals is beautiful! We are their stewards! God Bless the Japanese people!

Patty, I'm thinking that these streets and cities that were built on the land are ENABLING the deer to have a place to cool off. I think it's helping them. I hope someone provides them water though.

It is a shame to see that, for a herd to be that large obviously all the natural predators have been exterminated :(

  27. Anonymous says:

Yes. Deer carry ticks. Read up on Lyme disease. If you feed them they will come. Particularly if they are being crowded out by overpopulation.

What happens when the velvet comes off and the bucks are ready to rut? Umm, could be some potential damage there.
