Abandoned as a puppy and growing up on the streets, this mixed German shepherd was vicious —until he was rescued, shown some love, and then he, himself, rescued a dying baby hummingbird.

The grateful bird refuses to leave the dog’s side, and so apparently Rex has a gentle friend for life.

The birdlet had fallen from a nest and was covered with ants when Rex found her under a tree. Ed Gernon who rescued the dog thought it was dead, but Rex — adopted just a month earlier — refused to leave the bird behind.

The Whittier, California man finally realized the hummingbird was still breathing, took her in, and nursed it back to health with a sugar syrup mixture — he named it Hummer and even taught it to fly using a hairdryer.

It’s been more than a year but Hummer refuses to leave, insisting on staying close to the dog who steadfastly refused to abandon the chick. Birds, even penguins, can build strong bonds with those who rescue them.

The bird lives in the house and Gernon, who created a YouTube page devoted to the bird’s exploits with Rex.

This is illegal and people need to know that if they find an injured bird they need to get it to their local bird rehabilitation place.

To the person that said it was illegal. Shame on you! There aren't many people nor a dog that would have saved that little bird. Most places would have just let that be end. This is what I call a tiny miracle in life. Let people be happy and enjoy the fact that a lil dog who should've had no reason to trust people, show how how much love he had to give. And to the owner God bless you for being a part of this. Sometimes bending the rules saves a life or two.

Humans continue to learn life's true meanings through behaviors of the animal kingdom...we are all one life....respect it!

Ok, I saved you but you fly really weird. Get off my head !!! Too cute.
If a person needs help in saving a bird, you can call rescue places. They are swamped and may respect the fact that you are doing exactly what they would do. That means releasing to the wild again.

To the idiot who said this is illegal, you try getting the wildlife people to stop being lazy and do their jobs. Took me two months to get a rehab wildlife center to come pick up a baby opossium I rescued. They are essential to keeping tick populations down yet people still believe they carry rabies and they dont...

Another example of how animals are closer to God and the wonders of Nature than many people! Learn while you can.
